The client operates a Zinc roasting, leaching, and electrowinning (RLE) plant. CaEng’s role was to evaluate and recommend improvements for the roaster, waste heat boiler, and off-gas handling systems. CaEng’s experts conducted a site visit and thoroughly reviewed existing operational information and data. Based on their findings, numerous recommendations were provided, accompanied by order-of-magnitude capital cost estimates and indications of the potential improvements to output.
CaEng was originally contracted to complete the prefeasibility study for this project. The planned facility will process copper scrap, E-waste, and end-of-life residues to produce copper and other valuable metals. It will incorporate both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods to generate pyro-refined copper, copper cathodes, and other intermediates containing valuable metals. After successfully delivering the prefeasibility study, CaEng completed the feasibility study and is now actively supporting the client through the project’s execution phase.
CaEng was retained to develop a study presenting options to bring smelter emissions into compliance, taking into account the brownfield aspects of the project. The initial options included concept-level layouts and order-of-magnitude estimates. The preferred option involved combining gas streams and installing two separate flue gas desulphurization units to accommodate both existing and future planned facilities. The study covered treatment of electric furnace off-gas, Peirce Smith Converter secondary off-gas, and anode refining off-gas. In addition, CaEng supported the development of major discipline deliverables, including PFDs, P&IDs, general arrangements, and major equipment package inquiries sent to vendors for design feedback and budgetary estimates.
CaEng was retained to provide owner’s engineering services for a greenfield smelter and refinery project in Indonesia. The owner opted for an EPC execution approach, retaining a single contractor for the design, construction, and commissioning of the facilities. Pre-award services included reviewing the tender package, assessing EPC proposals received from bidders, assisting with technical bid evaluations and recommendations, and conducting technology trade-off studies. Following contract award, CaEng participated in numerous design reviews and HAZOPs, and provided guidance on selected topics throughout the engineering phase. CaEng also delivered focused support during construction and provided onsite assistance throughout commissioning and startup of the smelter and refinery.
